Local Governance Election Season Events and Websites for 2020

Local Governance Election Season Events for 2020:

  1.  Get your ballot questions answered!

REPORT:  I attended with great thanks to the Scotts Valley Seniors for hosting.

(on Jan 25, 2020, 2-4 pm at Scotts Valley High School, Student Union Building555 Glenwood Drive, Scotts Valley, CA   Free.  Tax-deductible donations accepted  RSVP to (831) 600-8440)

REPORT:  I and several others felt disappointed that the very first described part of the event description did not happen:  Sadly we got nothing but the titles of the LOCAL BALLOT ISSUES, frustrating my main reason for attending.

– Santa Cruz County Clerk/Registrar of Voters Gail Pellerin will present information on local ballot issues including the new electronic voting system that debuts at this election and the proposed sales tax increase.  Plus, meet the candidates for Santa Cruz County Judge:  Jack Gordon, Annrae Angel and Nancy de la Pena

REPORT:  We learned that the new electronic voting system is essentially to assist impaired voters.  Next, a pitch to Scotts Valley home owners to accept a new parcel tax.  Then, too little time was left to question the 3 judge candidates was less than ideal since there are so few candidate forums.

We also learned that Santa Cruz County has 116,000 registered voters, and 111,000 of us are permanent vote-by-mail.  Most useful about that is our ability to deposit our finished ballots into silver mailboxes in various SCC locations – which is needed since delayed-by-U.S.mail ballots risk getting nullified.

2.  Monday Jan 27th 6:30 pm Candidate Forum at Corralitos Woman’s Club: 33 Browns Valley Rd. – For races that Corralitos residents will vote on:

County Supervisor, 2nd District:   Zach Friend, Rebecca (Becky) Steinbruner

State Senate, 17th District:     Maria Cadenas,  John Laird,  (no show) Vicki Nohrden

U.S. Rep. Congress 20th District: (no show) Jeff Gorman, (regretted) Jimmy Panetta,  Adam Bolaños Scow

A few minutes were given to other candidates who came but were not part of the 3 offices highlighted.

Report:  The half-hour live Q&A (no requirement to write questions on cards) for each race became rich exchanges and deeper conversations, as desired.

Notes on the Q&A portions will be posted soon, here.
